Troubleshooting the "Unique ID requires a unique value to be entered" error
Who is this article for?Users who encounter the error message when adding a new Identity.
No special access or permissions are required.
When adding an Identity for a user, you may see the message "Unique ID requires a unique value to be entered". This article explains the cause.
1. Issue
It is a requirement that each user identity is unique.
If you attempt to add a new Identity and use a value that duplicates one already in use, you will encounter the error.
2. Solution
To resolve the issue, ensure that Identities are not reused.
This can be more difficult than expected because:
- the application hides users who are not Active, so you might not see them at first.
- users can exist as Staff or Contacts, so it may be that a person you are trying to add as a Staff person already exists as a Contact person.
In order to locate the user with the existing Identity:
- Clear the Active filter by clicking X.
All users will appear on the screen.
- Check both the Staff and Contacts screens.
In multi-client mode, this can involve checking multiple Clients. - Locate the original instance of the Identity.
- Set the user to Active.
Alternatively, you can convert the user from one type to the other, as necessary.
