Using the Excel Importer tool

The Excel Importer is a specialised tool that enables users to import specific types of records from Excel files into the system. This tool is primarily designed for use during the implementation phase to facilitate initial data loading.
This article outlines its purpose and uses. For further information regarding the tool, template creation, or to arrange training, please contact your Account Manager.
1. Overview
Primary Purpose: The principal function is the initial data loading during system implementation.
Ongoing Use: Although the Excel Importer may be utilised for routine operations, this is not its primary purpose. Consequently, only limited support is available for ongoing operational use.
Security and Permissions: The Excel Importer adheres to the same security protocols and business rules as the main application:
- Users may only upload data for which they possess the appropriate permissions.
- All mandatory fields must be completed.
- Standard validation rules are enforced.
2. Prerequisites
2.1. Training
Users must complete mandatory training, which is a paid service, before accessing the Excel Importer.
2.2. Templates
The Excel Importer utilises preconfigured templates:
- Standard templates are not supplied as standard.
- Each template is custom-developed by our Technical Services team as part of a consultancy service.
- Templates are designed to meet your specific requirements.
3. Launching the tool
The Excel Importer may be launched in two ways.
3.1. Direct launch
You can launch the tool directly from any folder, such as your Desktop or another location on your hard drive.
3.2. Toolbar button
You can launch the tool using a toolbar button within the main application.
This option requires the:
- Tool files to be stored in a standardised location accessible to all users.
- Main application configuration file (vision.exe.config) must be amended to specify this path and subsequently redeployed.
4. Installing the tool
The Excel Importer cannot be installed using ClickOnce. Ensure its version matches your main application.
To install the tool:
- ask your IT department to deploy it.
- download and install the tool files (if you have local administrator access).
5. Configuring the tool
To configure the tool:
- Locate the Pentana.Tng.Tools.ExcelImporter.exe.config file.
- Amend the file to specify the correct URLs for TngService.svc.
