Linking to Records and Attachments from External Applications
Who is this article for?
Users using external applications.
Ideagen Internal Audit (Aura) supports deep linking, which allows you to create hyperlinks in external applications — such as Microsoft Word — that open directly to a specific record or attachment. This article explains how to copy a shortcut and insert it into an external application, and describes known limitations and troubleshooting steps.
Copying a Shortcut
To obtain a deep link to a record or attachment:
- Open Aura and navigate to the record or attachment you want to link to.
- Right-click on the record or attachment.
- Select Copy Shortcut from the context menu.
The copied shortcut will contain an address in the following format:
VisionProduction:LaunchAudit,Audit,7f46fc64-f3e8-45c4-b2e8-8d3759998e3aInserting the Shortcut into an External Application
In your external application (e.g. Microsoft Word), paste the copied shortcut as a hyperlink. When a user clicks the link, the following will occur:
- If Aura was installed using ClickOnce, Microsoft Edge will launch and prompt the user to follow the link.
- The application will launch and navigate directly to the correct record.
Limitations
Bookmarks and Specific Pages
It is not possible to create deep links to bookmarks or specific pages within documents. Links will always point to the record or attachment as a whole.
Troubleshooting
Google Chrome set as default browser (ClickOnce installations)
If Google Chrome is set as your default browser, clicking the link will fail. You will be prompted to download vision.application instead of seeing the application launch. This is because ClickOnce requires Microsoft Edge to function correctly.
Resolution: Set Microsoft Edge as your default browser.
Aura is not installed
If the application is not installed on the user's machine, the external application will be unable to locate and launch Aura. The following error message will be displayed:
“The address of this site is not valid. Check the address and try again.”
Resolution: Install Aura on the user's machine.
