Clearing the local cache
What is the local cache?
When Pentana is started up for the first time, it creates a folder on your local computer where it stores infrequently-changing data (e.g. dropdown lists), personal settings like views, widget and filter configurations, and checked out data (offline audits and reserved documents).
You will have one cache folder for each instance of Pentana.
Who can clear the cache?
Because the local cache is stored in the user profile, any user has the permission to clear their own cache.
Where is it located?
Pentana stores all cache directories in the same location, one for each instance of the application:
%localappdata%\Vision\
Inside this folder, you will find one folder per Pentana instance. For example, if your system is hosted by Ideagen you will find PentanaPRD and PentanaUAT.
When should I clear it?
Deleting files from the cache may be required to fix some issues, and will be directed by the Support team or our knowledgebase articles. Before deleting:
- If you use the check out feature of Pentana, be sure to check in any offline audits before clearing the cache. If you fail to do so, you will lose your offline changes
- If you have any reserved files, you should commit them before deleting the cache.
- If you delete the entire cache, you will lose your configured favourite views, widgets, and filters.
Pentana should be shut down before clearing the cache. If it isn't, Windows won't let you complete the process.
How should I clear it?
In fact it is recommended to rename the cache folder rather than delete it:
- In File Explorer, go to %localappdata%\Vision
- Rename the instance's folder (e.g. rename %localappdata%\Vision\PentanaPRD to PentanaPRD_old)
- Start the application again, and you will notice that it automatically crates a new cache
If you are happy with the changes, you may choose to continue using the application as normal.
If you wish to revert back to your old cache folder, you'll simply delete the new one and restore the old folder to its original name.
